Research from the University of Tartu: home-based photodynamic therapy shows promise in improving oral hygiene

Findings from the University of Tartu reveal that a new type of home-based photodynamic therapy – using the Lumoral device – can meaningfully reduce dental plaque even in healthy young adults.

This is the first study of its kind conducted in Estonia, and it offers a fascinating look at how innovative technology can support everyday oral care. The authors of the study are alumni of the Institute of Dentistry at the University of Tartu, Laura Gusseva and Liisa Leontine Lill.

"I chose the topic of the research paper because we were interested in innovative oral hygiene solutions and wanted to explore how it is possible to make already good oral hygiene even better. I came across the Lumoral product through my research supervisor, who teaches the prevention of dental diseases at the university and is therefore aware of new preventive trends and opportunities," explains Laura, one of the researchers, describing the motivation behind the study.

What the study set out to discover

The researchers followed 30 healthy adults aged 20-25 who already had good oral hygiene habits. The goal was simple: to see whether adding Lumoral’s dual-light photodynamic treatment to their routine could further reduce plaque levels – especially in hard-to-reach areas where brushing and flossing alone often fall short. Participants used the device for two weeks, followed by regular monitoring, plaque staining and photo documentation.

The most interesting findings

  • Plaque decreased in 70% of participants immediately after using Lumoral, and in 78.6% of people by the end of the study, even though they already practised good oral hygiene.

  • The photos taken before and after treatment showed visibly cleaner tooth surfaces – in some cases plaque was reduced to zero on stained surfaces.

  • Participants reported that teeth felt smoother and that plaque built up more slowly throughout the day when using the device.

  • Interestingly, simply being part of the study made many participants pay more attention to their daily brushing technique – a reminder that awareness itself can improve oral health. Still, the data clearly showed an additional improvement directly linked to Lumoral’s use.

What does this mean for everyday oral care?

The study confirms what earlier international research has suggested: photodynamic therapy can effectively reduce plaque and support better gum health. Even if a person already brushes and flosses well, Lumoral can offer an extra layer of protection, helping to break down plaque where regular tools may not reach.

A gentle conclusion: technology that supports healthier habits

The research shows that Lumoral is a valuable addition to daily oral care, enhancing cleanliness and helping maintain a healthier mouth with ease. For anyone who wants to take their oral hygiene a step further – especially those who appreciate evidence-based solutions – Lumoral is a smart, gentle and effective companion.
